Martin Mitchell, 1996
Martin Mitchell is a retired Minnesota State University, Mankato professor of Geography. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area as a kid, Marty always had a passion for geography and nature.
In 1984, Marty graduated with a degree in Geography from California State University, Chico. Shortly after, he obtained his Master's Degree in Geography from The University of Georgia in 1986. Finally, in 1993 he obtained his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
In 1993, Mitchell became a professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, a position he held until his retirement in 2025. He primarily taught courses on geography, cartography, and climatology. In 1996, Mitchell started a project where he followed the route of former professor George Miller as he documented the Dust Bowl in Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. Mitchell matched many of Miller's photographs, providing a look at how the landscape and the inhabitants of the region have changed.
